What should you look out for when buying a lithium battery?

Before you decide on a lithium battery, there are a few important points that you should consider. First of all, you should definitely pay attention to the integrated BMS (battery management system). This electronic system controls and monitors the battery and also regulates the output power. For example, if you want to operate an inverter using a LiFePO4 battery, you should make sure that the battery type is suitable for this. Many inexpensive batteries on the market are often not powerful enough and switch off when high power is required.

Specially designed for motorhomes

Lithium power on-board batteries are specially designed for use in motorhomes. In addition to higher output capacities, they also fit into the standard battery boxes for AGM or gel batteries and are equipped with the corresponding round terminals. This means you can easily mount the battery in the original holder of your vehicle.

Fast and efficient charging

A conventional on-board battery takes a long time to fully charge, as the charging current has to be reduced early on. Lithium batteries, on the other hand, can be almost fully charged with a high current, which means that the charging process is completed much faster. However, it is important to check whether the existing charger and solar controller in your vehicle are suitable for use with LiFePO4 batteries. Some battery manufacturers specify certain charging voltages that must not be exceeded, as well as maximum charging times. With optimally equipped chargers, you can even change the charging options using a LiFePO4 charging characteristic curve.

Combination with conventional on-board batteries

The combination of a lithium battery with a conventional AGM or gel battery is also interesting. A special battery computer controls this connection and ensures that all the advantages of the lithium battery are utilized. The conventional on-board battery only kicks in when the lithium battery is almost discharged. The lithium battery also takes over in unfavorable temperatures. This means you get the benefits of both battery types and can charge your PowerUnit system with any charger, regardless of the charging time.

High-performance on-board batteries for all needs

The lithium power on-board batteries offer a high storage capacity, low weight and high cycle stability. Thanks to the intelligent battery management system (BMS), the batteries are safely monitored internally. It is possible to operate inverters with higher output power without any problems. Even with the smallest version, the MT Li 85, you can operate an inverter for a Nespresso coffee machine or a hairdryer with up to 1200 watts. With the MT Li 105, inverters of up to 2000 watts are even possible. The larger batteries such as the MT Li 240 and MT Li 300 offer even higher outputs.

The internal BMS of the lithium batteries not only offers high output power and monitoring functions, but also has several temperature sensors. These ensure that the battery is optimally charged in every climate zone when chargers, solar regulators or boosters are used in parallel. You can also switch off the battery completely via a switching input, which is particularly useful if the vehicle is not being used for a longer period of time or if you want a main switch function when leaving the vehicle. An auxiliary output is available to continue supplying power to an alarm system or important standby consumers. With a Pro-finder from Thitronik, you can even control the battery remotely via an app. The app shows you the current voltage and automatically sends a text message if the voltage of the on-board battery reaches a critical value.

The battery housings of the MT Li 85 and MT Li 105 are adapted to standard dimensions so that you can easily install them in a standard bracket. Thanks to the round terminals, the existing cables can be easily attached. From battery size MT Li 120, the connection cables can be screwed on directly. However, it is also possible to retrofit adapters for round terminals.
