There is only a short distance ahead of you to the next campsite. Suddenly, dark clouds gather and the darkness gradually becomes denser. It is now all the more important that your motorhome has good and fully equipped vehicle lighting to get you safely to your destination.

Exterior RV lighting is an important factor for safety during your outdoor adventure. The right vehicle lighting ensures that the motorhome is recognized early by other road users in the dark, and at the same time is important so that you can see well yourself - both when driving and, for example, when setting up or dismantling in the evening or at night.

In many cases, the motorhome also has lighting for the living area outside. For example, patio lighting can be installed here so that you can sit comfortably in front of your vehicle even late at night. Particularly practical are lights that are equipped with a motion detector and are automatically activated when you or someone else approaches the motorhome, and go out again automatically after a certain time. This saves you electricity and provides an additional level of safety when camping.

What you should know about the vehicle lighting of your motorhome

It is important that all existing lighting equipment is working properly and is in good condition to ensure road safety at all times. The following regulations must be explicitly observed for motorhome exterior lighting:

1. A motorhome must be equipped with at least two headlights that shine white or bright yellow. The headlights must be adjusted so that they illuminate the road at a sufficient distance and oncoming traffic is not blinded by them.
2. Motor homes must have at least two red tail lights. The lights must be clearly visible in the dark or in poor lighting conditions.
3. Motorhomes must be equipped with turn signals that emit an orange light and are mounted on the front and rear corners of the vehicle respectively.
4. At least one brake light must be present and illuminate brightly when the brake is applied.
5. Fog lights are not mandatory to be installed on the motorhome. Fitting them is permitted, provided that the headlights comply with legal requirements and are used correctly. For example, they may only be turned on in special situations.
6. The vehicle lighting on a motorhome must include a hazard warning light that can be turned on in dangerous situations.
7. Last, RVs must be equipped with reflective markers and lights that are visible in the dark or in otherwise poor visibility conditions.

What to look for when maintaining your vehicle lights

To ensure that your RV lighting is working flawlessly and can meet all of the above requirements, it's important to check all lights regularly. This is especially true for the brake lights and high beams, as both are essential for safety on the road. At least once a year, therefore, it may be necessary to replace both lamps.

In addition, the headlight setting should be checked regularly, especially if your motorhome has been subjected to heavy use or has been driven through a pothole, for example. Both can change headlight settings, blinding other road users, which can be very dangerous in moving traffic.

Good to know: For motorhomes, it can also be important to periodically check the vehicle's interior lighting for functionality, especially if you're going to be on the road for an extended period of time while using the vehicle as a living space. All light bulbs should be working properly to avoid any short circuits or wiring problems that could mar your camper's happiness.
