According to § 56 para. 1 StVZO must "[...] motor vehicles in accordance with paragraphs 2 to 3 have mirrors or other devices for indirect vision, which are designed and mounted so that the vehicle driver to the rear, to the side and directly in front of the vehicle - even when carrying trailers - all for him essential traffic operations can observe [...]".

In plain language, this means that as soon as your caravan is wider than the towing vehicle (which applies to most caravans), you must fit additional caravan mirrors. Exceptions are tent trailers and folding caravans. You should also follow this rule for your own safety. On the one hand, you do not want to put yourself and other road users in danger due to limited visibility. On the other hand, high fines await you if you are caught driving without the prescribed caravan mirrors.

Tip: Take a look at the original rear-view mirrors of your towing vehicle when the caravan is hitched up. Can you see the rear corners of your caravan in them? Then you don't need additional exterior caravan mirrors. If you can't see them, you should get caravan mirrors as soon as possible.

Caravan exterior mirrors: How to adjust the caravan mirrors correctly

Incorrectly mounted or poorly adjusted mirrors fail to serve their purpose. Therefore, you should check your caravan mirrors before you set out. When installing them, make sure that the additional mirrors do not interfere with turn signals, sensors or the like.

Here's how to properly adjust your caravan mirrors:

• As the driver, you must still be able to see the rear corners of the car.
• On the left side, you must be able to see an area of 2.5 meters over a distance of 10 meters.
• On the right side, you must be able to see an area of 4 meters over a distance of 20 meters.

Caravan mirrors universal or vehicle specific?

When it comes to caravan exterior mirrors, a distinction is made between universal mirrors and custom designs. There are also mirrors with either flat or curved glass.
